Did you know that you may be eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Grant for a retrofit program worth up to $5,600?

On May 27, 2021, the Canadian government launched grants for home improvements called the “Canada Greener Homes Grant.” Canadians are thrilled. In fact, the application website had visits from so many interested homeowners that it crashed. However, there’s no need to rush to apply. If you’d like to retrofit your home, you’re in luck because these government grants for home renovations are available to eligible applicants for the next seven years.

In this blog, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about these exciting new home improvement grants and how Crackmasters can help you with resiliency measures.

Home Owner Canada Greener Homes Grant Eligibility

To apply for the Canada Greener Homes Grant, you must:

  • Own a home that is a:
    • Single or semi-detached house
    • Row house
    • Townhome
    • An all-season cottage
    • Permanently-moored floating home
    • Residential portion of a mixed-use building
    • Small multi-unit residential building (three storeys or less with a footprint no larger than 600 square meters)
    • Mobile home on a permanent foundation
  • Prove you live in the home (landlords who live elsewhere are ineligible)

Please note that new homes are ineligible. First Nations land claims organizations and Indigenous housing management bodies are eligible to apply.

To qualify, homeowners must complete an energy evaluation, hire contractors, pay for materials and pass a secondary energy audit. Once they’ve met the expectations of the final audit, they will be given one or more of these government grants for homeowners.

Upgrades that Qualify for the Home Grants

Natural Resources Canada, the department that administers these home renovation grants, lists the following projects as qualifying for the home grants:

  • Insulation (up to $5,000)
  • Air-sealing (up to $1,000)
  • Window and door replacement (up to $5,000)
  • Heat pump installation and hot water equipment (up to $5,000)
  • Solar Panel installation (up to $5,000)
  • Resiliency measures like batteries, foundation waterproofing, and roofing membranes (up to $2,625)
  • Smart thermostat installation (up to $50, must be in combination with another retrofit program)

The conditions for these retrofit programs are that materials and equipment must be purchased in Canada or from a Canadian online distributor. The home grants will be provided retroactively once the upgrades have been certified. You will only receive reimbursement on retrofit programs that have been recommended by your energy auditor during their pre-evaluation. The amount of money received will be based upon the final energy audit.

How To Use The Canada Greener Homes Grant to Your Advantage

Before you apply for the Canadian Greener Homes Grant, reflect on your home upgrade concerns. Then, do a lot of research on the renovations you’re interested in, as well as the associated costs and the local contractors that are available to do the job. Once you’ve ascertained that you’re eligible for the home grant, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is my home too hot in the summer? Or too cold in the winter?
  • How much am I paying for my electricity bill?
  • Are there any holes or cracks around my home?
  • How much am I willing to pay for retrofitting?

  • The sump liner is placed in the hole and wrapped with a filter cloth.
  • Clear gravel is used to fill the hole surrounding the liner.
  • A cast-iron submersible sump pump sits on the bottom of the liner and is plumbed to discharge the water that collects in the pit automatically.
  • A lid is secured to the pit, and the concrete floor is replaced.

2. Battery Back-Up Systems

  • A secondary pump is installed above the primary pump.
  • A trickle charger is connected to a marine battery that powers the pump.
  • It uses the same discharge pipe as the primary pump.

3. Internal Weeping Tile System
